MK Illumination’s project for Roedovre Centrum, Denmark’s oldest independent shopping centre involves the creation of a nostalgic, fairytale grotto with handmade, animated figures designed to captivate the imagination of children and create a traditional Christmas setting.
For the first of a two-year contract with Roedovre the grotto theme is based on the classic Narnia story from C.S. Lewis’s children’s book and reflects ice, frost, adventure and beauty. The setting, in which the hand-made animated figures are placed as features among an attractive sculptured castle and the MK Illumination 3.2metre Art Tree. The grotto is further enhanced by interactive activity; movement, light and sound by Narnia-inspired music. A snow machine is activated every four minutes emitting 15 second snow drifts over the castle. The ‘story’ told by the grotto also features the swan, Denmark’s national bird. For the Danes, the swan symbolises fairy tales and traditions forming an important part of the national Christmas adventure.
An additional attraction outside the centre involves snow machines that can be activated by SMS, which are very popular with children.
